Don't Mess with my "zen" thing

I am going to try and write down my story, of this new path...

Today. Was a 2 seizure day so far. Yet, once they are over I am usually able to go along with my day. Sometimes there is limping or very sore muscles after, but for the most part I can go along and finish my agenda as planned.

We are in the middle of moving severL things around in the house involving re-organizing our master bedroom and switching some of the furniture around in both of the other bedrooms. The exciting part is when complete I will have my own sewing craft room/ guest room and our master bedroom will have a real restful retreat area. Both of these projects are so exciting and I'm anxious to have my sewing area all done to try and inspire me again to quilt!

So as the "zen" appears in our house, I hope it flows into our heart, and soul.

Life changes

This past yr. And half I have went back to work full time in an accounting position, had the unfortunate loss of 5 family members , and now fighting the health care system on what has turned out to be the scariest health event I have had to face so far in my life.

I guess if you take anything away from these lessons it would be of appreciation. Love of family and friends close to your heart, and acceptance. Learning to face uncertain medical times is not something I thought the past few months, would bring, especially on the heels of so much personal loss in our family. Losing my Dad, Brother, Grand Mother, Aunt, and Great Aunt all within a few months of each other taught me that life is a precious gift, that fleets often far before we are ready. Each of these people had a unique purpose on this earth and in our hearts, and their passing brought our family together in a strong bond.

Being recently diagnosed with a benign 7mm partial calcified meningioma brain tumor has really thrown me and my family into turmoil. Then to hear my current symptoms might be originating from even more ailments have us perplexed. And to top off the situation with our current health care restraints, governing a broken HMO insurance plan, it s difficult to not be completely overwhelmed in addition to feeling bad with all the symptoms that are going untreated until a final diagnosis can be determined.

I am trying to be a well informed patient, and am learning that one must stay on top of these doctors to ensure adequate care. The statement " You must be your own advocate", is so very true!

Do you take the time to write down your thoughts? I have always encouraged my students to document, write down motivational thoughts or ideas, and to write the stories when they are in our minds of day to day life. I don't know what it is about this "adult onset memory loss" dilemma, but in experiencing it myself... I know it is very frustrating to remember things from years ago... and having trouble remembering an event from days ago!

The value of a journal, sketch book, idea book, recipe, diary or any other form of capturing ideas and even to do lists keeps life sane. What fun to go back and reflect, add in little notes here and there, and see what did or didn't go as planned.

Individual slips of paper that get trashed upon the completion of the list, seem wrong! To throw away a day to day agenda, seems like it didn't matter. So, keep a journal book near, and see what you can capture. It puts a sense of order to life, a sense of purpose for the thoughts and ideas....

Our soccer team parent bought this great ribbon and supplies for each parent. She asked me to sew these little goodies up for her. What a great way to organize buttons, bows, and any sort of collection that needs a great way to display. I love the idea, and will incorporate this idea into my inventory for sale. So if you have a need for a button, bow, or barrette organizer... give me a call.

Challenge for the week: create something out of your comfort zone. My challenge this week to my crochet and fiber art class is to create a fabric collage. When they complete their projects I will photograph the final products.... We are making mini wall hangings with our fabric collages, it should be great fun to see what is created!

Soccer, Japanese Erasers, and Christmas Twirl Skirt Set

This little Twirl skirt is off to it's new owner. I am working on all kinds of holiday gift items and will be showcasing at several shows the next few weeks:

If you are looking for a little outing next Saturday, come visit me and many other artists at the Olivenhain Arts and Craft Fair. Saturday, Nov 14 from 9 am till 4pm. ( At the old meeting hall on Rancho Santa Fe and 7th Street). I am hearing great things from many of the artists, and this would be the best place to search for very affordable Hand Made items for holiday shopping.

At this time of year, it is so much fun to attend these shows and see all the talent that is available in our local area! I am in awe at each show of the creativity that goes into each artists works....

So has your home been invaded by the "Japanese Erasers, Craze"? This collection has grown beyond the shadow box on the wall, to taking over adjacent bookshelfs... and the craze is still a huge driving force for the 11 yr. old in our house! The one time I hear no grumbling about going grocery shopping is if we are headed to the Japanese Market, where she is in hopes of adding to her collection. You have to admit, sure beats the "trading card craze" of years past! And the price is right, very inexpensive hobby!

End of soccer season is here for the Black Pearls. We had our pizza party today after the game, and trophy time! Next weekend is the tournament and then we bid this season, farewell... with mixed emotion! Great to have such a wonderful group of girls this season, and we will miss our weekly time at practice and game day on Saturday's.... but, nice to have some down time too, especially those early Saturday am game times!

The weather has been cooler and slightly crisp. Even though we don't experience true "Fall changes" here in Southern CA, we do get to add a scarf and a light weight jacket now and then... I think this year, Thanksgiving is receiving the honor that it should! We all have so much to reflect on during the tough year that is passing, and knowing that as families, we are all paring down some on extravagant expenses. I think these tough times, are bringing back the true meaning of the holiday season! We are all learning to find pleasure in the simpler things of life, and for that I am grateful...... So let's make our "Thanksgiving list" and when times seem overwhelming, maybe we can look at our list, and take a breath...... knowing in the end, it is health and happiness... not all the material things we had all grown so accustomed to in years past, that makes life special.

This very cool old baby bed frame is housing memory boxes, handmade baby blankets, and recycled record album set crafted into cool collection bowls and journal books... very nifty guy gifts.

Go completely GREEN, with these Cotton double edged napkins. Perfect for sprucing up your table for the Holidays. And at $2.00 ea... what a great buy for a lovely gift!

This wall hanging took hours and hours of piecing work. Each little square was hand cut, and pieced. The entire piece was quilted. and is a very gorgeous light catching piece for a bedroom or bath area.

Check out the new Booth Space, Debi from Out of the Blue helped me work it over... and I think it looked amazing! This venue is a fun place to be for the day... not only as a customer but as a vendor... we all had a great time!

Ahh, the soul of my sewing... Twirl Skirts. This one is All Charlie Brown... and it brings Thanksgiving and the Great Pumpkin on with a bit of retro fun! I hope some little girl gets to twirl around in this one very soon...

The wine bag collection found a new place to hang on this cool vintage bench.

The weekend was exhausting as usual. The ladies were all amazing, and we will all be back next month. Look for details soon. Wine Bag Party

Fall is here, if you don't count those 80 sometimes near 90 degrees days that pop in now and then... Halloween is just around the corner. I love Fall, I love the change and the crisp air. In the next round of Kids College we are going to be learning some weaving and I can't wait to pull out the great oranges, browns, and other great Fall colors. Nothing beats pulling on my favorite shorts, a T-shirt and topping it with a light weight sweat shirt or button down shirt... yes, I know fancy right? But, ahh... that is almost as good as comfort food to me!

On the crafting scene lately it has been wine bags, scads and scads of wine bags! I think I am starting to dream "techno colored" wine bags. These bags for me are a means of mixing recycled fabrics that I search out from garage sales, outlet stores, and friends give me from discards... and of course my own closet... and yes... don't fret I wash and properly clean before starting each project... my favorite are old JEANS! I love taking old jeans and using the legs for the inside lining of the wine bags, they make WONDERFUL linings! The outside of the wine bags are an inspiration from my Granny Fryer's patchwork style of quilting using fabrics that I purchase from travels, from coupons ( I am an AVID coupon fabric shopper) and again from garage sales, and friends sharing with me the discards... all of these treasures are then sewn up "quilt style" into my own designed wine bags...

Best part of the wine bags, they are the "IN VOGUE" of the "GO GREEN SCENE"... what better way to keep your wine nice and chilled, give it to family or friends in a completely hand crafted bag that can be used over and over in all natural COTTON fibers! and when soiled just machine wash ( delicate please!) air dry....and use over, and over, and over... how GREEN is that!

Telling off on myself... after a few years of full time sewing... I recently was making up several twirl skirt sets ( photos will be up soon) that I will be selling this weekend at the Mermaid Mercantile... and all of a sudden while using the ruffler foot my machine started going completely haywire! I had just recently purchased new materials including some threads.... and couldn't imagine what in the world was going wrong... I cleaned everything out... digging out the mess out of the inside of the machine... and started over... Within a few minutes, again a complete uproar of thread above and inside my machine occurred... I was going insane! So I spent the better part of the day doing this over and over... deciding my wonderful Bernina sewing machine was now sick and going to have to go see the Bernina Sewing Machine Doctor. Bright and early the next morning, I pack my sick machine up, drive it over to the doctor, and within 2 seconds they say... ahhh that's your problem your running Polly/Cotton 50/50 Blend Thread instead of 100% Polly or 100% Cotton Thread.... I said your kidding me? No I'm not.... But, yes... they were right... with my "decrepid" eyes I had recently purchased a blend thread not realizing it...as I couldn't read the fine print... UGHH!!! So, I have to say where is the petition to the sewing thread manufacturers to put the details on the thread in large print???? :)

So back up and running, I am turning out wine bags, twirl skirts, even working on a mermaid doll... yes, I said a Mermaid Doll... any help in this catagory would be GREATLY appreciated! I am trying a "rag style" simple, cloth doll... and not sure yet on the proper size.... still in the "development" phase. Also working on some holiday napkin and place settings, and even a quilt.

I attended the Wine for Art auction last night for Soroptimist International of Oceanside/Carlsbad held at the Art Museum in Oceanside. The event was to raise funds for local art scholarships to be given within our community, and I was very proud to be a part of this organization of hard working women. The current display in the museum is from :
Fabric of Survival: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz was absolutely heart tugging from an artists perspective as well as a part of history that we should never let be forgotten. What an amazing story put into fabric. It is only here until the 25th ( later this week) so, if possible please go see this wonderful collection.

Purses on Parade Starring "Fred" The purse holder...

It has been a parade of purses at the sewing machine lately... Small "clutch" reversible style and larger "market bag" style.

I added an inside pocket to the market bags because frankly, ladies we are ALL about the pockets right! With me, even my pants have became... ALL about the pockets... ( well, and stretchy waist band, but that is an entire blog post all it's own!)

Why so many pockets? Cell phones! If it isn't in your pocket, or in the purse pocket.... it is a problem. I go upstairs, leaving my cell phone down in the "crafting area" only to hear it going off time and time again.

The other item pushed into the pockets, is my I-pod. Since I spend many hours a day creating, or marketing I am always listening to my favorite crafty podcasts. With over 350 podcast subscriptions, I must never be too far from my I-pod! Ok, I don't actually listen to EACH and EVERY one of those... but, free is free and why not subscribe to the things you are interested in so that you have a "library" to choose from. So yes, I am a podcast "freak" of sorts... and the day that I have to pay for listening will be a sad day indeed!

So how do you like "Fred"? He is a turtle souvenir I picked up our last trip to San Francisco.... so he is a new resident to Carlsbad... I needed a purse holder this morning, and he volunteered for the job since everyone else was gone!

And for anyone who cares... it is 85 degrees in our house today... this being the 3rd week of our 2009 "heat wave"..... This coastal living, isn't too pleasant at the moment! Sleeping at night has been rather YUCKY!

Let's Swap!

I have been one to always enjoy swapping... didn't matter if it was hand me down clothes, recipes, or any kind of surplus I might have on hand. Given our "learning to live with less" these days we are all starting to think more about the coupons, bargains, and thrifty ideas available to us. I have been the avid coupon lady for years.... in fact an entire blog post could be dedicated to funny stories my family has had to endure through the years with my "coupon woes", but I will spare you that for now.

The term "Swap Nation" has been showing up in magazines, blogs, and websites for months. A recent statistic stated on Craigslist that requests for Bartered goods and services was up 125% over the past year, and was one of the most popular catagories offered on the popular buy and selling site.

A couple of sites I have heard about and would like input if anyone has had success in using: u-exchange.com, and freecycle.org. If you are involved in any local organizations or clubs, books clubs, or networking groups you might be able to organize a "closet exchange for clothing, books, recipes, and other surplus items. I am going to be working on a craft supply swap with a networking friend who suggested we trade our extra unwanted supplies with each other, what a great way to save money, and have new supplies to work with!

Our Flag, what does it mean to you?

If you were to answer what my favorite color or pattern is, it by far has always been ruled by the FLAG! I love Red, White, and Blue. Bring me into a store and I will go straight for anything flag related. Something about our flag has always been a sense of peace for me. Some would describe the love of red, white, and blue as being "folk art". Possibly, from living in the Southern part of the United States is where I developed this as a young adult. Whatever the reason, it is certainly ingrained in my soul!

Do you look at the flag as Art? Or as a way to honor our Troops? What about as our History, not just as Americans, as a group of people coming from all parts of the world gathering here in America...? The flag, does it represent all of these components?

I would love your input!

I believe a quilted flag wall hanging, which I started a couple of months ago, will need to be picked up and completed....I can never have too much Red, White, and Blue in my life!

Artsy Little Wine Bags

This week has certainly zoomed by. I spent part of the week in Simi Valley, where my husband's work is based. It was necessary for him to be in the office on Monday and Tuesday, so given the distance we decided to take the gas money for the 2 trips and just spend the night. The kids went along also, and we hung out in the book stores, a local mall, and made a couple of art store stops while Dad was at work.

One of my favorite stores is Kidrobot, which merges urban street trends, fashion, and pop art to produce limited edition collectibles and clothing. Emerson ( who is 10) is hooked on this stuff and spent her hard earned savings on several items. I was hoping to score several of their bags to use in my recycled projects, and was given 5 by the very kind sales clerk, so be on the look out for some new "kidrobot" loot in my Etsy store soon!

We also went to Blick Art Supply store for my first time. I have seen this great art supply store online, heard about it on some of my favorite podcasts, and decided... this trip was the time to go. The only problem I am really into art and so is Emerson ( who as I mentioned is 10 yrs old), the oldest, Alex who is 16.... could care less about art... So as I am on isle # 2 of what I believe must be about 12 isles... he asks.... are you about ready???? Guess, I am going to have to just return sometime for a more intense isle by isle shop!

The pictures above are of a "scrappy moc quilted" wine bag. The inside is line with old blue jeans, and the outside fabrics are remnants from projects past. With the jean material lining the bag is nice and thick enough to keep a chilled bottle frosty for a long time. It will also be able to be machine washed easily. I have since made 3 more, and plan to place for sale in my Etsy store soon. Plans are also underway for a line of lunch bags in a similar scrappy recycled style.

On Thursday I attended a Free motion quilting class, where we learned more about our sewing machines than I have known to date. Step by step we went through all the machine settings, feed dogs, feet, etc. When we got to the free motion portion of the class and to work on our sampler, I felt very overwhelmed! Still have work to do on my sampler before I can post pictures, but the learning experience was amazing! There are some awesome teachers out there, who have such great skills to share... The handout she gave us in this class, will be my reference tool for years to come, and is now a valuable part of my sewing library. Look around in your community, and take advantage of the wonderful sewing classes when possible. It is well worth the effort. I found this class through my local quilt guild, and sewing circle group.

Soccer is in full swing, big game tomorrow am... I have to remember to pack my camera as we are playing on the "big turf field".... I hear the jitters around the house today from both my husband ( the coach) and Emerson ( the goalie). I am looking forward to game day!

Why do you make things?

Why do you make things? Please leave your comments, as I am collecting your comments to go in a future project. Wouldn't it be fun to hear everyone's reason as to why they craft? What is the motivator, what is the end feeling, and why is it important for you to create?

Myself... I find a pleasure in making things, a sense of accomplishment, and peace. If a new idea pops into my head I have learned to WRITE IT DOWN! So keeping a "craft journal" is very important to me... I can jot ideas, websites or links, doodle the image, whatever I need to trigger those ideas later when I sit down to work. Being an accountant most of my life has been a way for me to work in an organized manner, which my brain requests.... creating, lets the other side of my brain play... which is a must for me.

I don't sit down with a certain craft and stay there. Tending to jump from scrapbooking, sewing, crochet, and altered art projects gives me lots of outlets for getting my hands "dirty" and to intermix all aspects of creating when possible. I personally love recycling items from around the house into my creating. I work with boxes, plastic bags, and found embellishments of all sorts. The more I get into recycling products into my crafting, the more I look at everything I see as a possible "art project".

Back in Jr. High , Home Economics was my favorite class. I can remember getting a bad grade on a project of room design that I had worked on for several weeks to complete. I was so frustrated with the teacher, not understanding the reason for my grade. When I spoke to her about why she gave me such a low grade, I was surprised to hear that the main reason was she had expected me, above the others, to work in a more creative manner, to bring a completed project that was brilliant in being unique... she felt I didn't "think outside of the box", although my project was good, she felt I had the ability to do better... That was a turning point for me in creating. I learned to "throw away" the patterns, to try from trial and error, and not be so "cookie cutter".... That moment was my starting point for a life of not only enjoying to create
but, in NEEDING to create... needing to play, to learn, and sometimes to trash and start over! :)

So I'm claiming to be 32.... and for some reason even my oldest Granddaughter isn't buying that one! Oh well, I tried!

This has been a very stressful week, having word on Monday that my granddaughter Brooklynn was very sick in the hospital. Turns out it was a nasty Strep infection that entered her blood stream... I have never heard of anyone I know running fever of nearly 107 degrees! Bless her little heart, such a trooper she was! She is doing better now, and finally back home.

I took my birthday, and rode along with my husband to Simi Valley where his office is located. After dropping him off, I had a couple of errands to run, and then the rest of the day was mine. I enjoyed the bookstore, lunch out, and tons of mall walking and book reading in a quiet corner. Can't say I have had a more peaceful afternoon than that in a while! Give me a great book, glass of iced lemonaide tea from Starbucks... and I can sit for hours.

Crafting table has been idle. I have been selling my husbands collection of Hotwheels cars, Hard
Rock Cafe pins, and various other household dusty items on Ebay. This has really taken most of my time recently, so I have to find balance to life starting now!!!! If I can't craft, then life just seems off.

I have several projects planned for this weekend, including some serious organization of photos... to better prepare for upcoming projects. Any ideas on the perfect photo organization method? I am not sure where to start. I currently use a file folder system in a plastic bin, but have SERIOUSLY outgrown that course of action.... Would love to see pictures of how you handle... I will post some before and after pics... this weekend.

Off to eat some yummy cheesecake from my step son. He brought it to me from Cheesecake Factory, YUMMO!

Standup Scrapbooks... and graduations, Perfect match!

I have been making these 8 sided standing albums and love it! The great thing is to know that the end product unlike many scrapbooks we create, won't be put away, closed for no one to admire and enjoy. The fact this album expands and sits perfectly on a mantel, dresser, desk top, or bookcase... any place of "presence" makes me smile. What a great way to showcase this years events, vacations, and put the people in our lives at a place of Honor.... showcased in a manner that says, "I love this memory".

I created this album for a cousin of mine, who is graduating high school this year. I don't get to see her as we live 1/2 way across the nation from each other, but I think she will enjoy this package when it arrives. In this time of fast, online, internet EVERYTHING..... it is something I want to give the people I love. Something that they can hold, touch, and hopefully enjoy for years to come.

When you are creating a memory, you are savoring a smile, one that will repeat itself over and over.

Just back from a recent trip to visit my family and have some "Granny Yono" time. My granddaughters are growing at rapid speed, each developing their own unique personality. They are opposites in some ways, and as you can see..... destined to be great cooks! This is their 2nd attempt at pie making with their great grandmother giving them direction. I think cooking is definitely going to be a passion for both. I find myself just in awe of these girls, and amazed at their eagerness to learn anything that comes their way. I am definitely, a VERY proud "Granny Yono"!

I returned home and decided it was time to re-arrange my crafting area. Isn't that what we do, work in our space, and then after awhile decide it needs some changing to keep ourselves motivated with creativity? Given that I have taken over the formal dining area, and now the den area just inside the front door... yes, this is the site all visitors see when they FIRST step into our home! omg!!!!
So with my best attempt to re-organize my "space".... it was time to set into action a few new projects... I have a couple of new patterns purchased recently that were needing to be pulled out and attempted. The first is a really great pattern for pillow cases. I love the ease of this pattern, and the sizes included were nap, regular, and king... I tried out a couple of nap sizes, and a small version of a regular size to ensure I have it all figured out before attempting the largest size.

Next, I finished up my first attempt at a cute little purse in some of my favorite yarn. I loved how easily this little bag worked up. My next attempt is going to include a inside pocket and a snap closure. I have never crocheted a bag like this, and will definitely be doing this again.

Last on my weeks accomplishments is the "Lickety Split" quilt I am working on, I still need another outside edge, quilting, and binding. I just love this pink, black, and brown fabric! The silhouettes are very nostalgic feeling and I love the action of the pattern. If you DON'T pick directional and difficult blocks in varying sizes to work with, I believe that this pattern would be a quick and easy sew..... As soon as I get this one finished, I want to try another with the same pattern and see what a difference in look I can achieve.

I have been working on creating a tribe in Twitter and building my following. The viral online community is changing at rapid speed, and seems there is so much to learn. I am searching for ways to enhance my online presence in the social networking realm. Challenging myself to put in several hours per day in regards to marketing online, and improving my inventory that is currently available in Etsy.

Go Green, recycled Movie Jackets

So after many months of creating recycled notebooks using boxes of all types, I decided my next venture should include the outer cardboard sleeve often found on dvd, vhs, and blueray movies. I am rolling out an entire line, using all genres including action, science fiction, disney, and some classics thrown in. I will post several on my Etsy page, and have many more in my current inventory. These blank journal books are perfect gifts in these tough economic time. If you can "use" the gift you receive, all the better that it originates from trash headed to our landfills!

Spring Break "09

What a great week we had in San Francisco. So much to see and do! We enjoyed a wonderful time at my sister in law's home venturing out for all kinds of site seeing trips. We hit Japan Town, Haight Ashbury, Marine World Africa, The Mystery Spot, and of course no trip to San Francisco is complete without Pier 39. I absolutely love visiting there, and can't get enough trips in to the local Japanese/Asian grocery stores.

I visited a wonderful Orgami art shop in Japan town, so be checking in often for updates on the inspirations I found there.

A little granddaughter time....

I recently was able to fly in for a little "Granny Yono" time. We ventured to an aquarium to take in the sites, with a buddy along ( little girl on the left). These girls are growing up so fast! Each trip in it is shocking to me how much they have grown since my last visit. The different personalities are developing as they become "little ladies".... although sometimes they aren't so "ladylike"!

I wish I could see them every day, but do my best to get there as often as possible. I can't wait till they are old enough to "go on the plane to visit Granny" all on their own! What fun we could have with a week or two each summer, hanging out at the beach and running around. At this point they are really into art, crafting, and creating.... I hope that passion only grows and grows. I will have to continue on doing my part to ensure they are the next generation of crafters in my family.

It has been a pretty quiet week, I'm working on getting my goodies into a local store on a consignment basis. If you have any ideas on this venture feel free to drop me a note.

We are in the process of finishing up taxes and although the hard part is over, now the pain and agony of paying out funds owed to the IRS is REALLY hurting..... UGH!

All of the news is driving everyone crazy, with the "bailouts", "mortgage crisis", and the overall economy doing nothing but nose diving, we have to keep finding ways to cut back, save, reserve, and overall "get back to basics".

In the crafting scene, I am working up my kits for class this Sunday. We are going to be working on our "In the Life of ME" books...... and the challenge is to motivate each student (including the teacher) to keep this project moving forward before those memories go..... I love the way my book is turning out. I truly enjoy creating base page layouts, to then go back add photos and whatever goodies I can locate from my "history". My dream would be to have people contact me, give me their "box of memories" and hire me to put it all together in a wonderful life book for them to cherish.

Off the craft table

January has been rushing by at record speed. I have been working on several quilt block, a lap quilt I am crocheting, and the Photo cube and cards are from the Jan. Scrapbooking class I hosted last weekend.

Weather.... omg, record highs here in Carlsbad for Jan. so far. Can you believe 80+ degrees here on the coast. And yet the East Coast is currently being blasted with vicious cold weather. What in the world is going on with our weather! The local beaches have been highly visited lately, and the summer clothes are in full swing, or at least during the day that is. Our evenings are still getting rather chilly, so it is shorts for day and sweats for night......

I started 2 Meetup Groups this past week. The first (Carlsbad Scrapbooking Meetup Group) is to organize and have a place for anyone interested in Scrapbooking or altered art to be a member of. The second ( Carlsbad Sewers Meetup Group) is for anyone interested in fiber arts: quilting, sewing, and crochet. There have been 14 people sign up for the scrapbooking group and 5 for the sewing group so far. I have events currently scheduled in both areas, although I am frantically searching for a venue for the sewing group. Hopefully some of the ladies signing on will help me in the venture.

Pouring over several quilting blogs lately I have been very motivated to turn on the sewing machine more and more. Although, I believe it is time for a "tune up" for my machine. The stitches aren't flowing as smoothly as they first did, and even skipping a stitch now and then. Guess it is time to visit the "sewing machine doctor"....

It is awesome to check out all the wonderful blogs out there for quilters. I found this website: http://quiltinggallery.com/quilting-bloggers/. I am even listed on the last page of bloggers from California ( due to my last name starting with a Y). You can search around the world by country even by state to located quilting stores, websites, and blogs. Great tool to add to you favorites list. Wouldn't it be fun on a road trip to map out various quilting stores and hit a few along the way!

I plan to start a little ending to each blog that is more my thoughts for the day.......

Scrambled in my thoughts:

Don't we all deserve a 2nd chance? Doesn't life throw us all curves at times, decisions that must be made (hard as they may be), or missed opportunities we didn't take when the moment was there?

Wouldn't it be great if we could in our little way of paying it forward, be able to somehow go back and right some of those moments? Words we wished we had said, deeds that went undone, lives we wish we would have reached out to.....

So if each day, I can somehow take moments, little seconds, to reach someone else. To say, "You are important to me, your words and thoughts are bold and meaningful.... and I cherish this time I have with you".

Our life is so fleeting, time so precious, and value is to be found in each person's path we cross. Reflection on what makes us smile, and what gives our life purpose and drive.... aren't those the most important moments of our day?

Enjoying a beach walk

Even though we can see the beach from our home and be there in just minutes.... we find long stretches of time go by without making the effort. So when we start walking, and enjoying the wonderful ocean air, it is such a refreshing moment. On a recent rather cold afternoon, at high tide we went to check things out at our local beach. Without fail, a few minutes at the beach will clear up any doldrums racing around in your head.

I sometimes wish we received the crazy intense waves like in Hawaii and other places, but still love our local shores, and awesome sunsets.

So while other parts of the country were pounded with snow and ice storms during the holiday time, we experienced our much needed rainfall and cold days. I have really grown to hate the cold, and know what a wimp I have developed into when it gets below 70 degrees :) We did finally give it up and turn our heat on. It seems as the seasons are changing globally, we are needing heating and air as never before. It seems wrong to be in Southern CA and experiencing the cold nights that have been hanging on far too long!

Wimp, right?

Now that the holidays are over, I have been working on crocheted rugs, finishing up some quilting projects that have been gathering dust, and planning some new sewing and crafting projects to start on.

We are trying a new location for the crafting class this week, hopefully it will be a comfortable venue for everyone who attends. I have great hope to continue growing my business this year, and feel 2008 was the first succesful year I have experienced since leaving the work force.

Pay it Forward

Today in our networking meeting the topic of "Paying it forward" came up. Our founder was speaking about her thoughts on how our world is headed in the wrong direction and a grass roots movement is taking place and needs to be advanced of doing good towards our human race to ensure we thrive in the future. We discussed many options and goals for the upcoming new year, and challenged each member to find their own way of "Paying it forward".

The timing of thoughts and events is amazing to me. Considering this same topic ( having just finished the book of the same name) weighs on me year after year. Since childhood I have had this notion that I have a mission to complete. A dream has haunted me for most of my adult life in regards to doing my part to make this earth a little better than I found it. I discuss it at times with the people I love the most, these thoughts and feeling but never really taking a major step to put things into action. Maybe the timing is now right, maybe it is now my time to "Pay it forward"...... Maybe, just maybe it is time for all of us to take a good hard look inside our hearts and realize things are tough out there and somehow we each have to start putting those good thoughts to action.

How can we all start to pay it forward?

Christmas, December Lights, and tradition

Wow, what a flying November and December! I have only shipped 3 Christmas packages so far, and my to do list for the next 10 days is growing, expanding, and exploding.

So as usual I am rushing, and taking it all in stride.

This weekend we are involved in a "Commissioners Cup" soccer tournament. Today, with lunch packed, blankets, chairs, card games to keep everyone entertained during breaks we headed off early to get a parking spot. The field is huge, with over 9 games going on at any given time. You can hear the screams of parents, and enjoy the kids running all around putting their best effort into their games. We were victorious today, and will head off early tomorrow am for another full day of games ( or so we hope..... if we lose it is over). Even though the season is over now, and this is the final weekend of games, it will be missed until next year. Something about a Saturday am soccer game full of cheers and excitement is a great way to get the weekend off and running.

I have done ZERO shopping, and if gifts can't be pulled from my own stash I will purchase any other needs from Etsy. It has actually been nice to not be caught up in the whole "mall experience"... and kindof leaning towards gift cards, and possibly a little weekend getaway for the kids... so I have no reason or need to break my record of NO MALL Traffic..... I am loving the peace and quiet of it all!

Next week I must prepare for upcoming class, and am currently searching out my ideas.... there are some really awesome holiday gift items popping up around the blogs, many things to pull inspiration from. I am blown away by Tim Holtz's 12 tags of Christmas series, check it out if you haven't as it is completely AMAZING! I am considering a class on tags, and alot of embossing, which we have never tackled.

We had our Christmas party for the networking group I am involved in this past week. Our founder treated us to her home cooked Persian lunch, and we were all filling our plates, and enjoying the new tastes. It really is fun to try new foods, new recipes, and new traditions...... if we teach our kids anything about the holiday season, I hope it is to explore different cultures, and celebrations. I think everyone left the party a little fulfilled with the holiday season for all the new things we experienced.

I just finished reading "Pay It Forward", although had seen the movie about this movement, several years ago. What an amazing thought.... if we would each make a gesture of good deed for someone in need.... in whatever capacity we could..... and always "pay it forward" if having received such a gesture in our own lives.... what a better world this would be.

Hum, what a New Year's resolution to ponder.....

Vendor Booth double take

This past weekend I was a vendor in the Follow Me Boutique and Carlsbad Street Fair. The hardest thing for me in creating a booth is the variety of table set ups depending on venue size and regulations. How do I ensure ample product, eye appealing table display, and order to the whole process? Each and every set up brings to mind areas to improve on, products to continue with, expand on, or products to deep discount.

I find it interesting that given this weekend, on Saturday's event the attendance varied from day of the dead, to only one real rush, then back to void of customers. Compared to Sunday's event, which easily put more than 1000 ( possibly double that) customers walking by just in front of my tables. Yet, sales were higher on Saturday and the "eye catcher" was different on each day. Saturday, I could have sold purse after purse. Sunday, my recycled LP album journals and matching bowl were the big draw. Target market I believe was close to the same for either event, although Sunday brought a larger community not only in numbers but in diversity.

So brush off and move on, refocus..... regenerate, and prepare.... Prepare for that next event just around the corner. To be a crafter, in the realm of sales or teaching you have to maintain a good sense of humor, a tough skin, and continually upgrade your own eduction. Sharing with others within this arena provides insight and clarity. Networking is not only great for growing your business, but for improving and working out the kinks with other like minds. I suppose a little bit of crazy along with a ton of passion, is the ultimate key to success.... in any venture.

This week in our crafting class we made cards.... and boy, did we ever make cards! The theme was take 1 or 2 sample patterns, use ALL scrap papers, add in a little embelishment here and there, and create a swap method. If your not aware of a swap, think of a cookie swap... each participant makes several of her favorite cookie, she then shares equally among the group.... with each person doing this, you leave with a TON of cookies and a large variety, all with only creating her same cookie in a large quantity. So swapping was the theme, despite some grumbling along the way.... :) At the end each person left with a magnitude of cards to show for their 4 hours of fun, and in reality they only had to complete 1-2 different cards to receive this wonderful bundle to take home.... I don't know if we are ready for another swap right away, but I do believe everyone had a fun time, despite the hard work, and when they each received the cards from every other student..... it all seemed worth it in the end.

In reflection of teaching and vendor sales, I think the sharing of art with each other is one way of keeping the sanity.... when it seems out of control, at least for a little while. It feels like with each and every connection, that a friend has been made, and somehow we have made this world just a little calmer along the way. My students, customers, and networking friends are people I can share with, and feel connected.

Why do we create?

I am not sure if being a crafter is a talent or if it is a natural trait. I do know if I'm NOT crafting, life feels out of focus. Sometimes, it is hard to stay within the season, although Fall is absolutely one of my favorite times of year. So in tribute to our Spring here in Carlsbad, I found a picture of the wonderful flower fields we are known best for. This week's projects have included painting bird houses, and a Spring photo seemed just right for this story.

Creating to me is far above expression. I certainly don't feel it is a talent, it is more of a sincerity of how I feel. If I'm feeling moody, then crafting in any medium allows me to slow down the clock, pull from deep inside of me the reasons for not being happy, and put it all into perspective.

Recently our cars seem to be experiencing gremlins.... little this and thats keep going wrong, not just on one but all of our vehicles.... definately putting a wrinkle in our budget as it is layed out. But, I had to finally say, "We can yell, curse, cry, or laugh.... which shall we choose?" I'm trying to go the laughter route, because in the day to day of matters.... that REALLY is the Best choice. It really is about perspective... and isn't the real reason we are living our life day to day, far beyond the drudgery of things like "car gremlins"?

So, I am in Spring.... in my mind that is! And, the bird houses are ready for debute this weekend at the Follow Me Boutique and Carlsbad Street Fair. And I am laughing inside, loving the fun of Spring.... on this week of Halloween. :) Drop me a note, and tell me what season your "in".

Memory Keeper

The top photo (baby pic) is a box created in today's class. The box has a magnetic closure, and plenty of room inside for those precious momentos from days past. The next 4 pics are of scrapbook pages also taught today in class, depicting various ways to "scrap" those items above and beyond pictures through the years. The memory keeper box class will be offered a few additional dates during Oct-Nov. so if interested send me a note. Follow Me Boutique

This past weekend I was able to set up and sale my goodies with a great group of women under the name of "Follow Me Boutique". We were a varied mix of artists who captured every realm in art. The tables all looked so amazing, and the talent I was able to meet was awesome! We hope to have many upcoming events as a group, and are looking for venues to hold our events during the year. All customers that I spoke to were very complimentary of each and every vendor who was showcasing their art. All pieces were unique and one of a kind, making it a wonderful shopping experience. I talked to several customers who all stated, " this is certainly one stop shopping for all gift needs throughout the year!" Summer is gone, fall is here and the fires are starting to rage throughout Southern CA. I hate to think we are in for another terrible fire season, but the skies tonight are filled with smoke in the distance, and the news reports are full of different fire events that have already began to take their toll on our area. We have to be very thankful for all of our brave and ever present firefighters. They are doing a remarkable job each and every season.

Crafting wise, I am preparing this week for a community garage sale on Saturday. This is my last sale of holiday goodies that are in storage. I am also taking advantage of the sale to do some DEEP CLOSET cleaning that is LONG overdue! After the garage sale it is time to prepare for my October class that is fast approaching. We are making a very cool memory box, and I can't wait to finish my sample. Look for a posting soon, to showcase these very lovely ways to store those precious memories.

Face cloths, Dish rags 100% cotton!

The crochet needles, sewing machine, and crafting table are in full swing preparing for all the upcoming Fall Craft shows. The crocheted dish rags and face cloths are made from wonderful colors ( many to choose from) and are all created with 100% cotton threads. I love using these in the kitchen, and the bathroom. What a great thing to have a nice basket full beside the sink, ready to go at all times. I find myself washing off my face many times through the day, and loving the refreshed feeling! These are from a pattern my Grandmother has used for years, and are tried and true! When dirty just pop right in your washer and dryer, and re-fill those baskets. With the holidays fast approaching, a couple of these along with some very fragrant soaps for kitchen or bath, and your gift is complete!

Granddaughter's Stage Debute

This past weekend my Granddaughter was involved in a talent competition at the State Fair. At 5 yrs of age, she was one of the youngest to compete. As luck had it, she was first up to perform. And from reports I hear she did a WONDERFUL job! Ok, maybe I'm a "little" biased, but to be so young and get up on stage and sing in front of a crowd..... she is my hero!

As time goes on, I hope she always reaches for her dreams. My motto for all my children is to try your best, and don't let anyone tell you to stop reaching for the stars. My heart is overflowing with pride looking at these pictures! Who knows, we might be seeing the next "American Idle" on her path. Keep it up!

"Sea" of Twirl Skirts

The past week I have been sewing twirl skirts like crazy. I have made all of these to fit ages 3-5 and in Halloween, Christmas, and a variety of other fabrics. These are going to all be shipped off to my daughter who is going to make matching hairbow sets to go with each and then will be available for sale. What fun to work together in creating some very cute and unique sewn items!

Next, I am making another group that will be available at Oct-Dec craft fairs that I am participating in. If your interested in a set, just leave me a comment or send me an email. It is very cool to also pair the skirt sets with a shirt that has been embelished with some of the same fabrics from the skirt in various embroidery decorations.

Quilts, finishing Granny's quilts.

I am finally getting back to working on my "lesson Quilts" from my Granny. She worked with almost a year ago on learning how to quilt, and started me with 3 different quilts to do. I completed the top of the pinwheel and am putting together the 9 patch now. Having not looked at my "UFO" (unfinished object) in quite some time, I had to call yesterday to get a few little pointers on how best to put the rows together. But, as I knew she would.... Granny set me straight in minutes, and I put in several hours yesterday on the 9 patch quilt top.

My next hurdle will be after I finish all 3 tops ( I also have a Dresden to complete) is whether to outsource the finish quilting, or learn to do it myself. I am fearful at trying to do it myself, the tops are looking beautiful, but not too sure about my "machine quilting and binding skills".

I know that Granny is paying her quilter a FRACTION of what the long arm quilters charge here in CA. So, will have to do some research on this matter.... Maybe, a lesson or two is in store for me, from a machine quilter.

It is such a beautiful day here, this was my 3rd day for walking to and from school... and the hill although still tough to conquer was a little more bearable today. The aching muscles are easing up some, and I see a light at the end of this "back into the routine of exercising" tunnel..... Maybe those jeans won't be quite so tight when cold weather hits. :)

I'am off to shop at my favorite "Natural Foods" store, Frazier Farms. The cupboards are in need of restocking! Hopefully I can find some really interesting healthy meal options. With a 3 day weekend in store, it is time to stock up.

Card Kits ready for the Holidays!

Cards, Cards, Cards! I have been in a let's get a huge stack done mood lately. Both of these kits have 8 cards enclosed and are in a matching decorative box to house all of the cards with room for more. I was so pleased to find the "lady" stamp set. Having craved a "fashionable lady" stamp for a long time now, it was great fun to work with. When my daughter was creating her hope chest several years ago, she had found these wonderful little dishes that reminded me of "a trip to Paris, enjoying the sidewalk cafes." And we would laugh and make plans of being there one day. This stamp set reminds me of those dishes. Very whimsical and "Pretty Woman" like. So even though my days are filled with t shirts and shorts (which I LOVE), instead of fancy heels, hats, and dresses... it is still fun to play!

School has started back, YEAH! I am ready for the structure for all of us. Summer was great fun, but it is time to get back on schedule. This year I am walking my step daughter to and from school, which is our way of "saving the environment and some fuel costs". But, feeling the pain in my legs as I try to get back in shape, as we have a very long hill to climb it is harder than I expected although I know it is a great way for me to ensure myself a little exercising each day. Hopefully by next week I will be taking that hill with ease... or at least not huffing my way so intently.....

Crafting wise, I am working on Fall Craft shows trying to locate a few more to be involved with. And, I am hitting the sewing machine to try some new projects also. I would like to do more quilting at least on small scales such as wall hangings, or lap quilts.

Class prep and other deadlines

Is summer already closing? What happened, and how did time fly so fast? August soared in, along with a long anticipated visit from my daughter and her family's arrival for a week at "Granny Yonos"! How exciting, action packed can we be with a almost 3 yr old, and a vibrant just turned 5 year old! We hit all the major highlights, including a very long day at Disney Land. Princess were the TOP of our list, and we met them all! The week flew by, and tears filled my eyes as they drove out of site....... so hard to be this far away from them all!

So back to work, and August is crammed packed. I am kicking off this weekend with a huge arts and crafts sale (garage sale) on Saturday, followed by crafting classes on Sunday and Tuesday. The inspiration for Sunday's class is in the picture, scraplifted from the CTMH website, we will be creating a form of these cards along with some other surprises on Sunday.

Then the following weekend I am listed as a vendor for a Breastcancer fundraising event held at Bates Nut Farm as well as later in the day still set up for the evenings event that includes a motorcycle event. This is going to be an extremely LONG Saturday, and hopefully full of customers ready to shop.

My inventory consists of upcycled note pads, lp album books and record "bowls", and my newest obsession with "green shopping bags". I have tons of work to do before next weekends shows, so will say good evening for now.... get crafting!

July, my favorite month!

Recently I told my husband my favorite Holiday has to be the 4th of July. I have always loved Independence Day! From hosting family get togethers, to full blown family reunions I have always loved this time of year. Summer is on full blast, and the 4th is a great time to picnic, cook out, and have fun with family and friends. This year was very quiet, just myself and my husband. But, still a very special day.... in fact I would have to say, quiet is nice!

I am preparing for end of month classes coming up on the 27th and 29th. Looking at several ideas using both black and white and color versions of the same photograph for a scrapbook page layout. The last time I did this technique my inspiration was my granddaughters first hair cut, and it turned out really cool. So, will need to make a pit stop in the next day or say for a few black and white pictures to work with.

Also on my agenda this month is #2 of what I hope is 3 fantastic garage sales. The first was beyond imagine, with a great turn out. #2, is going to be to hopefully clean out a large percentage of items, MANY never even brought out for the first garage sale. #3 in the fall is going to be dedicated to mainly Christmas items... TONS and TONS of Christmas items...... so after that, I hope I can see into my garage and shed! It is completely full at the moment, and mainly crafty type items lead the way.....

Aren't garage sale fun? Looking through someones items, and finding that perfect treasure! Very addictive!

We have had a crazy summer so far! Started off with being present during delivery of my daughter's surrogate twins! What a unique opportunity to watch my daughter fulfill her dream of helping a family who couldn't naturally conceive children and then to see my little granddaughters learn in my opinion a wonderful lesson on how to help someone when you can! I was amazed at the whole process, and what a beautiful little boy and girl are now with their loving family as a result of this gift!

Next, we spent our summer vacation in Kauai, and as always it was remarkable. (I will add more pics) we went on a treeptop zipline experience that if you know me, pushed my fears to the LIMIT! Being upwards of 200 feet in the air isn't my fear, it was the 2 bridges we had to cross while up there, one being a swinging bridge where EVERY step moved and swayed, and the 2nd being a completely CRAZY Single rope like a high wire circus act ( although you did have a rope to hold onto) But, I survived and loved it! We also went on a tour of a newly developed chocolate farm. This was not only interesting but gave a unique look at very rare plants, trees, and we even saw a "lizard fight" that I now find out meant "He, liked her".

Then on return day, I started to feel very ill just before our 5 hour flight was to board.... Upon arrival in LA, we knew from my symptoms it was going to require a ER visit to make sure this was not appendicitis, and as it turned out after many hours and some testing it was a very bad Food poisoning of sorts. So the next couple of days there was no crafting taking place in my home! YUCK!!!!

So back to the craft table.... what's new? I have been working on books, making books from any sort of recycled box I can find. I have used cereal boxes, snack boxes, and my favorite so far has to be from band-aid boxes....They are great for sketch books, recipes books, planners, notepads, personal diary, kids "car kits", and little photo albums. These will be for sale at local street fairs and craft shows, and I will post a few in my Etsy store.

I also am doing some birthday parties. At Simply Ambrosia ( where I have several items for sale, and also teach crafting classes) we joined forces for hosting birthday parties. This weekend there is a "Tea Party" themed birthday party that I am doing the art/craft for. The girls are having a real tea party and the theme is Hannah Montana. So for the craft I made books for each girl from drink coasters, they are going to decorate their book with a kit I made for each book chock full of ribbons, bling, and everything "Hannah Montana". Will be excited to see how well they enjoy their party.

The next classes are Sunday July 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 , and on Tuesday July 29 from 9:30 am to 11:30am. If interested in attending please contact me! Space is limited especially on Sunday.

Mother's Pride

Today I was giving a little Step mom pep talk about how we have to be careful in the decisions we make.... how sometimes taking a slightly easier path to ensure we can be on top of our game in regards to GPA, attitude, and happiness.... is sometimes wiser than putting ourselves in a situation that might be tougher than we are truly prepared to handle... causing us to then loose our end goals and agenda. I mentioned not letting our natural human nature to be a little strong minded get in our way of admitting our need to evaluate along the way.

I used my Son, as an example. He worked since a little boy on our family ranch, then in early Jr. High started working also for others, including ranchers, and a local tire shop all the way through High School. During college, he went the Jr. College route, and worked through paying his own way. He finished his degree on his own sweat and merit, having earned every grade through hard work, and having to pay for school on loans and through working jobs along the way. His dream had always been to become someone who could work within the great outdoors, enjoying what he grew up around, and he stuck to that dream. Now, he is a very respected young man in his community doing what he loves to do best.... and I see him as the loving, caring, husband, son, and friend that I knew he would grow up to be. He knows how to work hard, and he knows how to respect how hard he has worked. He has every reason to be very proud of the man he has became. Many young men today, grow up not knowing who they are, what life is about, and what direction to take. I respect those that hold their head high and even in times of mistake, know that they do the best they can each and every day. I wake up each day proud of my children, and the adults they each develop into. I cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh, long to hold them as babies again, ok, only for a short time :), and I take pride in watching them venture out and see what they accomplish. Life truly is wonderful, when you have such great kids!

June already?

June is here? Seems like the year is rushing by so fast as usual. Thought I would upload one of my favorite pictures from Universal Studios since they are in today's news from this weekends fires that have destroyed several buildings on the lower lot including many buildings we have toured when on the backlot tram ride. Isn't my honey cute hanging out with the mummy?

So far summer has brought higher than believable gas prices, tornadoes and other weather related terror by record numbers, and the longest presidential race I can ever remember. It seems desperate times are hitting all over the nation, and all over the world. I am suddenly hearing stories of people in food lines that never believed they would find themselves in such a situation.... it is hard to not fear the future and what it holds. I try to imagine if now my generation is going to feel the brunt of something big, and wonder if we are ready? I wonder how do we prepare, and how do we prepare our children? Is this what my grandmother felt, what her mother felt? And by surpressing the fear, and telling oneself to not fear the unknown, to not be negative... is one being smart? Current fuel is $3.17-3.19 and the highest I have seen at the pump myself, has been $3.39. Still, we take one day at a time, try to make smart choices within our budget, and look for ways to lower costs along the way..... guess that probably isn't any different than what any generation would have done.

I noticed in class this week, that when given open time to create a layout of their own each student went a completely different route. I provided 3 props: a tag encased within a simple brown paper bag envelope, 2 white brads, and 1 silver heart brad.... they used stamps, papers, and ribbon of their own choice. Each lady moved quickly and their pages were wonderful. We all share a love for crafting of various forms and class is always filled with networking of cool websites we have found, or the best sale we found while out and about. It is fun to keep a variety of projects on hand to bring each month to share. I wonder who walks away with more from the lessons, myself or the students?

Next week, I will be making a trip to check in on my daughter, son, and of course the ever IMPORTANT GRANDDAUGHTERS! My daughter is very close to delivery of twins and this is a very magical situation. She is a surrogate Mom for a family that can't have children, and luck would have it there are going to be 2 little beauties for their family very soon. I am so proud of my daughter for this venture, what a unique and wonderful gift she is giving of her heart. She is getting a mixed bag of emotions and reactions from people, family, and friends.... but, like always she is taking it like a champ. I was thinking this morning how rewarding it is going to be years from now, when the appropriate times arrives for these little ones to understand they had a "Godmother" who "hosted" their way into this world.... I am scared of course as any mother is for a safe and healthy delivery, and recovery for all.... but, in my heart I know this is good. I know this is well thought out, and well meant, and no matter what society thinks of this not so often explored option, I am proud to be her Mom. I hope somewhere in that big heart of hers she knows what a beautiful young woman she has turned out to be. As I tell her often, life is too short.... don't worry about being judged along the way.... pick your own path, do what you know is right, and hold your head high.

The Day is Done

What a cool sunset we had! Just a few nights ago, I almost missed getting a picture of this cool sunset. This was the last few remaining seconds of what was a spectacular beam of light setting over the ocean. Just before I ran upstairs to retrieve my camera the color hues were radiating so brilliant, it was unbelievable~ almost a rainbow effect inside this beam of light that was piercing it's way from the skies into the ocean. Wow! What beauty!

Today I purchased a Zutter machine and the "MONSTER" paper cutter. The plans are to up-cycle things like record album covers ( does anyone call them that?) and create really cool journal books from them. I am going to try my hand at all kind of book bound projects, so anything lying around will probably become my victim! Having done some research, I see journals made from cereal boxes, game board boxes, candy boxes, and even license plates... so seems pretty much anything is prey. The future seems to be scrapbooks and journal books!

From tornados, earthquakes, and all sorts of natural disasters it seems our world is really taking a beating. Today China was hard hit, and the news is devastating. I sat in disbelief at what the news is reporting thinking to myself, why don't we just back out of this senseless war, and send troups to all the areas in desperate need of immediate life threatening hour by hour cries for food and water....... somehow, it just all doesn't make sense.

I have on my mind to start my stamp project with the theme of " World Peace".........

Tick Tock.... Time is running Out

The Street Fair is Sunday am so the clock is quickly ticking away the last 24 hours of last remaining precious moments of crafting, gathering, pricing, and overall worry and fear of what is to be the biggest the largest venue I have been involved in to date.

Do I have enough inventory, too much, the right type, the right price, should I sort out more items from the garage to take, the list goes on and on! So tonight I rest.... tomorrow.... tomorrow, I CONQUER the last and final day!

Little Chinese Takeout Box of Goodies

So a few weeks ago I listed this lot of little goodies in my Etsy store for sale, and it seems alot of people check them out... but no one is interested enough to purchase. The most interesting piece to me is the piece of shell that is made into a sail pin. I wonder who might have pinned this on to a jacket or summer shirt and wore it with pride. Probably dates back into the 70's would be my best guess. Then, the little pair of wooden shoes, how cute they would be in a little doll house. sitting beside a bed, all layed out ready for someone to put on! Little miniatures are fun, not really something I collect or have alot of use for, but interesting none the less.

I don't recall having a doll house growing up, I was into Barbie and all her "stuff". In fact, I can't say I have every known any little girl who actually had the whole doll house set up. My daughter had one of sorts, but it never really got "off the ground". I mainly just envied the ones I saw on TV and movies, they looked really cool.

Toys have certainly evolved from those days. The simple toys are no more. Tea sets are not top of the birthday list. Maybe I need to set up a doll house.... is there an age limit?

coke can.... auction

I decided to take down the auction.. I have had so many emails regarding this lot of empty cans and in particular the can from Swaziland. People are offering me ( now that I have removed the auction) up to 250.00 so far for the can... and angry that I removed the auction.

It has me thinking not so much about what is this particular can worth.... but, how mean people can be when they don't get things to go their way. I have had an email telling me that I don't "understand Ebay".... now on what basis does anyone make such as statement, if they bothered to look at my history within ebay, my feedback score rating it all stands for someone who tries to sale within the scope of what ebay is all about.

My only response to the people sending emails is: if this can was so important to you, then why didn't you place at least the .99 cent opening bid that then turns this lot into an Auction.... and at which point I am obligated to allow the process to play out... and can't remove it for no bids, or any other reason of my choosing .... which is within my rights as a seller...

without a bid... no auction has started... and ebay allows a seller to stop the "auction viewing" without recourse ( except of course paying ebay their listing fees). Seems I am the one who understands Ebay.... and if you wanted to buy it for $250.00 I believe an opening bid of .99 to secure the auction would have been a good starting point....

Somewhere along the way, it seems we are able to hide behind our emails, blogs, and paperless words throwing rocks if you will..... without regard to how or why people have made the decisions they have made.... It appears easy to throw slander, if you aren't speaking face to face.... Who gives us the right to be so critical of others, and when do we realize that to find peace on this earth.... we have to start within ourselves?

Just my little point of view from day to day life.... Crazy as it is :) So, now that the "coke can" is behind me, maybe I can get back to some ART!

Update to the Ebay Empty Can Auction

So I blogged yesterday about posting my ebay listing for international cans on Ebay for 7 EMPTY coke cans, and how within a few minutes of listing I had 3 emails asking for more pics, to sale the Swaziland can for 10.00 by itself now, and why the shipping in a flat rate box to Canada is SO high ( I question that one myself... WHY is the PO charging so much for their flat rate boxes, and who is pocketing all that profit!!! to Canada and international countries it jumps from $8.95 domestic to $23.00 Canada/Mexico and $37.00 all other countries what a surcharge! if we did that on our gas leaving????.... but that is a entire different blog)

Anyway back to the empty coke cans.... today's email is offering me $50.00 to end the auction.... Can you believe it, FIFTY DOLLARS for SEVEN EMPTY COKE CANS! WHAT an offer! But, it is my policy to never pull an auction for outside offers, so I kindly emailed back the person and tried to explain my belief in the "auction process" and hoped they would place a max. bid for $50.00 and see what happens.... you never know, you might lose a sale over this.... but, I believe in ethics above all... and I believe in standing by your ethics and hopefully the buyer understands your stance... I think it is wrong to pull an auction for these reasons. I believe it is wrong to "bid up an auction", I just like the whole auction process... seeing what happens and knowing no matter who you are, you have the right to buy an item for whatever price your willing to pay for it, UNLESS someone is willing to pay more for it... that is true freedom to me.

I find auctions fun and I hate to see people take the fun out of it .... so we will see what happens.

But isn't it amazing that 7 empty cans would be worth $50.00 in today's world? I asked my Dad yesterday when he called, "What would Papa ( his father) had thought of having to put $500.00 gas into a motor home to fill up the tank?" HE WOULD HAVE FELL OVER!" and now I would like to call Papa up and ask him "Papa, would you take $50.00 for 7 empty cans of coke?" :)

Posting for sale on Ebay

Besides selling on Etsy ( yonoscreations.etsy.com) I also sell on Ebay (terrichy2003) on a very regular basis. So today I was listing among other items this lot of 7 vintage (empty) coke cans from around the world. I know that 2 are from Japan, 1 is from Africa (Swaziland) and the rest I am not positive on, I believe 1 to be German... and not certain on the rest....

It seems there is a market for these vintage, empty, and opened cans from around the world. And from the emails that I am receiving I believe the most popular is going to be the Swaziland can....which is dated 1986, as I am receiving requests to sale it outright, before the auction ends by itself with the highest request being so far for $10.00 plus shipping costs....

Who would have thought, traveling around the world, sipping on a coke over the years you should have brought the empty can back in your bag.... put it in a box and some years later been able to sale it for $10.00? Crazy world we live in isn't it! The whole concept of Ebay, Etsy and other online modes of selling our wares.... we would have never considered as an option just a few years ago growing up! Yesterday's creations

Yesterday I worked on machine embroidery, at times it was easy sailing as in the little bee projects... at other times it was "Nightmare on Elm Street" as in a Sunflower project. I don't know what it is with my "Bertha" ( my nickname for my Bernina) but sometimes she has a mind of her own! In the middle of a project she will just up and say "your motif is done".... while I am saying ... "WHAT, are you crazy BERTHA, We are NO WHERE NEAR DONE!" In projects past I have totally wrecked a perfectly good tea towel trying to get Bertha back on track.... to no avail. But, it seems through the past year she and I have come to an agreement that regardless, I am going to be the winner in all accounts, and she IS NOT allowed to RUIN a perfectly good tea towel, shirt, or other precious item no matter what she thinks! :) So, we fight back and forth, and eventually sometimes after several hours.... victory is accomplished.... and then it is usually time for a break! ( As was certainly the case yesterday!)

So spring is here, actually at times it has felt like summer.... I am ready for some fresh projects to ring in the season. I found these lime green towels, and felt they were perfect for some little creatures to reside on. I am going to try some bird house embroidery projects today...

Monday, Monday

Kick off to "prepare for Carlsbad Street Fair" week! I have been getting all my supplies ready, posting items for sale on Etsy and Ebay and now it is time to sew and create for Street Fair that is fast approaching.

My greatest fear for a upcoming Fair is having enough inventory, priced in the right price range, and having a table that is INVITING to bring the people towards ME! Hum, with that said I feel that fire starting to build inside my stomach! With 3 weeks to deadline, I don't have much time left. My inventory is somewhat low, so I have to ensure that I put in alot of hours at the "craft table"... as well as think through a strategy of ensuring I have a great looking table.

I am pouring over Etsy in the Forums and chats for inspiration, looking through magazines while sitting in front of the TV, and listening to all my favorite crafting podcasters to keep inspired.

The weekend here was absolutely Gorgeous! With highs almost reaching 90 degrees, it was for sure NOT productive at the craft table! My husband and I vegged out, watched movies, and chowed down on all the cool foods I had picked out at Frazier Farms this past Friday. I love shopping their Natural Foods, and getting fish and other meats from their deli case. The people are so friendly and the selection is so unique. I picked out a really tasty stuffed salmon and grouped it with some grilled corn that had been brushed with lemon and paprika, along with some grilled pineapple slices, YUMMY! All this cooked up within just a few minutes in the convection oven ! And in our house I cook, hubby cleans! YES!

Taxes are done, wine was consumed, and all in all, the weekend FLEW BY!

So, as I always say..... let's vote for longer weekends and shorter work weeks! :)

Spring Break in California

It is spring break time in our area although in our home it is split between this week and next, due to the kids attending different schools. So that ruled out any family vacations planned for now, and given the gas currently at 3.71 per gallon..... vacations are at a all time high cost! From what we are hearing on the news local tourists parks and areas are experiencing a surge in attendance from locals staying at home this year. Couple the fuel costs and the recent airline problems of flight cancellations, traveling for vacation is not only costly but could be a real headache.

This week has been a busy one so far with listing new items for sale on Ebay and in my Etsy store. I am coming across some really cool little vintage items to be used for altered art projects that I am offering up for sale in Etsy. Some of these are from the 50's and 60's from what I can tell. ( The picture is of one of the listings). How fun it would be to include these types of little treasures in an altered art or mixed media project.

Another area I am currently focused on is trying some new projects and researching the costs for materials to get started with... looking at a Zutter machine to do book binding, and considering doing some acrylic altered art projects embedding some really cool stamps I have acquired from my husbands childhood collections from Japan. If anyone has any ideas for either of these ideas, please share! These stamps have my mind racing with thoughts of what cool projects I could create with them. Most are from all over the world, depicting really interesting pictures, and color. I can see these in some really neat little book covers, or on a necklace charm....

The week in full swing!

This week is the kick off for spring class preparations along with the start of working on inventory for the upcoming "Carlsbad Street Fair" to be held the First Sunday in May.... just around the corner I fear! I feel the creative clock is ticking, and know I must get in high gear to have plenty of goodies available for sale in time.

This little basket project is my take on the "Longaberger Small Gathering Basket" I will be showcasing/teaching in Sunday's upcoming class. We are all going to be "learning how to weave".

The latest news is all of Michael's retail stores have stopped in store classes, which is hopefully going to mean there are some students out there looking around for new venues to take in their crafting classes. My classes are open for new students and I am going to be adding additional classes to the calendar for any requests. Classes are currently being held in a local tea shop which is the perfect setting to relax, have a refreshing drink and tasty snack while learning and laughing with us for class. There is no pressure from any retail aspect to purchase items, which make it a great venue for relaxing and enjoying the art for a few hours. Feel free to contact me if your in the Carlsbad, CA area and would like to get in on the fun! You will meet some really great new friends!

I am still in awe over the weekends garage sale success. We were continually swamped with shoppers from before 7 am right up through our tear down time of around 1:30. I have never seen such a continuous flow of people through our neighborhood. I recruited the entire family to get up at 5:30 am and help me set up and run this extravaganza. Without my step-son and husband in full force I could have never pulled this one off! We averaged 15 or more people at all times, and sometimes had as many as 30 shoppers. People told me throughout the morning that this was the best sale they had been to, and they kept asking where was the crafting store that I was closing down.... :) it certainly looked as though there was enough inventory to have owned a store!

We were very tired and hungry folks after putting the "remains" back into the garage for the upcoming sale #2, which will be even larger! There is a large amount of inventory, especially Fall and Christmas themed that I didn't even bring out. At this point we still have the shed full, and the garage inventory went down about 1/3 .... It is amazing how many crafters were out in full force!

Garage sale prepare

Today is prepare day, The weather is bright and sunny so no excuses.

I am accepting my alchemy in Etsy to have a banner and Avatar created for my store front, so very cool! Seems like a great way to promote my business in a forward manner, and I am very excited to work with the lady I have selected in creating a really cool and eye popping creation.

I am hoping to find some Ebay treasures in the boxes as I price items, it seems Ebay is on a real surge at the moment. Wonder if it is tax refunds, or just springtime in general that is doing it? I talked to my daughter and she is booming doing some sales on Craigslists right now also... so, something is really getting people out and about on the boards searching and buying right now.

On the creative side, my next venture is the creation of the "Longaberger Basket" I am hoping as I search in the boxes I will find some really cool brads to use in this next upcoming classes. The baskets are small gathering style, and would be awesome done in lime green, light pink and brown, or maybe in the tan colors accented with some greens.

Podcasting as I price for inspiration, so will see what I come up with by the end of the day. Happy Monday and let's get to work!

Fairy pillow

Twinkle Fairy pillow with ties:

This was my first experience doing the "no sew" fleece projects. What a quick and simple concept: cut each corner approx. 5" square, and then cut the strips all the way around approx. 1" by 5" and tie each into a knot. Very quick and simple. I used a new pillow form purchased recently to finish off the project.

The concept is to enable even the non-sewer the ability to create a nice finished project in just a few minutes. The blanket craze seems to be very popular, especially with team logos. I found recently that the bright colors such as tie dye along with skulls brought the most attention.

I love the aspect of too many projects ahead. The push to meet the deadline.... without that little bit of fear inside building, life would seem rather dull wouldn't it? :)

It seems the more I work to become organized and prepared, the more I see I am lacking in so many areas! But, trudge on as they say, trudge on.

With the upcoming garage sale fast approaching ( now less than 1 week away).... I better get things priced, and prepared is my next agenda. Do you really think that with the economy the way it is today, that people are going to be flogging to garage sales? It seems traffic or sales are really down as far as unnecessary spending to me. But, maybe bargain shopping will be on the upward swing. So I will test the waters, and report back. Considering a local real estate company is promoting this so called "community" garage sale, placing all the advertising, posting the signs, and putting out maps of participating homes you would think the turn out would be very good. I figured what better time to take advantage of someone else doing alot of the marketing for me, even IF they are going to plaster their "imaged logo" all over the place... as long as it brings me the customers to my driveway on garage sale day, why do I care?

So trudge on, trudge on.... garage sale day and then on to upcoming classes very soon to prepare for, and right on the heels of that is the STREET FAIR and all my goodies that must be prepared to sale! OMG gotta go and get something done! yonoscreations.etsy.com
